| With a digital camera all the pictures you make are stored digitally, which means you can instantly view a picture after you have taken it and take as many pictures as you like, without having to buy new films all the time. It is easy to download the pictures from your camera to your computer, either at home or at the shop and edit them before printing. Once they are on your computer, you can easily share your pics with the rest of the world by putting them on-line, or e-mailing them to friends. |

Sony's range of six new Cyber-shot® digital still cameras (DSC-P32, DSC-P52, DSC-P72, DSC-P92, DSC-P8, and DSC-P10), announced today (Feb. 24, 2003), is a reflection of the consumer boom in digital photography. "While we're seeing incredible growth in the first-time buyer market, we know there are millions of consumers who are upgrading to get better picture resolution and more features," said

Steve Haber, senior vice president of Sony Electronic's Digital Imaging Products Division. "Our new 2003 P-series Cyber-shot camera line-up now starts at 3.2 megapixels, a resolution threshold that will provide even novices with confidence in their photography results." The size of the new DSC-P8 is ultra-compact with a metal construction. The digital camera is using a 14-bit DXP and a Clear Color/Luminance Noise Reduction function to make this end result as high quality as possible. The DSC-P8 features a Tracking Auto-Focus System to maintain continuous focus lock on moving subjects, a live histogram, and adjustable color saturation and contrast. The new Cyber-shot model is also able to handle with video clips with the new MPEG VX movie function that also records audio. The new Smart Zoom option replaces digital zoom, and intelligently uses the full resolution of the camera's imager at lower resolution settings to zoom into the portion of interest by cropping the image size.

Megapixel
MegaPixels: The number (in millions) of light-sensitive picture elements, or pixels, actually used by the camera's image sensor (CCD) to record light, and which are reflected to the final number of recorded pixels stored on the memory card.
3 MP

Optical zoom
Indicates the optical zoom capacity, the number of times that the picture can be enlarged with the optics of the camera.

Lens system
Type of lens in this product, expressed as its characteristics including lens, zoom capability, focal length, 35 mm equivalent focal length, and aperture range
Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens, 6-18mm (equivalent to a 39-117mm lens on a 35mm camera)
Lens focal range
A cylindrical piece of glass or plastic that receives and focuses light to form an image. Most cameras list an f-number and focal length for each lens.
F-Number: Indicates the size of the lens opening (aperture).
Focal Length: The distance between the image sensor and the optical center of the lens.
Lens Adapter: Allows photographers to use special lens attachments (Macro, Zoom, Filters, etc.) on certain cameras.

Camera CCD sensor

CCD (Charged Coupled Device): A silicone chip comprised of millions of tiny, square light-gathering diodes called Picture Elements, or pixels, laid out in a checkerboard pattern. This is the "film" of a digital camera. The light data gathered from these tiny pixels needs to be "processed" by the camera's image processor into Recorded Pixels.
Super CCD: A proprietary CCD system, produced by Fujifilm, that utilizes larger, octagonal-shaped, light-gathering diodes called Picture Elements, or pixels, that are laid out in a saw-tooth pattern. Super CCDs can capture more light information than ordinary CCDs; the extra information is used by the camera's image processor to improve color accuracy and ISO Speed.
Super CCD HR (High Resolution): Is capable of nearly doubling the Number of Effective Pixels that are processed and stored as additional detail in the Recorded Pixel file.
Super CCD SR (Sensitivity and Range): Uses a combination of small and large octagonal-shaped pixels to further enhance color accuracy, while improving detail in the areas of shadows and highlights, much like traditional film

Camera shutter speed
Determines the length of time the shutter lets light pass through the lens to the CCD. Shutter speed and aperture together determine exposure.

Display
The display technology. Flat screen technologies like Liquid Cristal Display (LCD) and Thin Film Transistor (TFT) active matrix technology are the trend.
In TV technologies one can notice FST (Flat Screen Tube) technology, and ARASC (Anti Reflexion, Anti Static Coating) or AGARAS (Anti-Glare ARASC) or simply AGC (anti-glare coating). The old tv and screen technology CRT means Cathodic Ray Tube. MLA = Micro Lens Array. p-Si=Polycrystalline Silicon. a-Si=Amorphous Silicon.

Camera viewfinder
Window in the camera through which a photographer views the picture. Used for choosing, composing, and often focusing the image.
Optical Viewfinder (Real Image): The photographer looks through a transparent window to frame and focus the image. The photographer is seeing the real image, through the window of the viewfinder.
Digital Viewfinder: An LCD display built into a camera that gives a digital view of where the camera is pointing. It's used to compose and focus the image.
